Wei Dong (1968 - ): one of China‚Äôs best known avant-garde artists. Born during the height of the Cultural Revolution, he studied at the Beijing Academy of Arts and Crafts from 1985 to 1987, and earned his BA and the Best Graduate award from the Beijing Normal Institute in 1991. His work utilizes both western and traditional Chinese practices, with classical Renaissance figures often dominating landscapes painted in the style of the Wu School artists of the Ming Dynasty. He frequently inserts seemingly random objects into his scenes, imbuing his traditional imagery with complexity and nuance. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Jack Tilton Gallery in New York, NY, Plum Blossoms Gallery in Hong Kong, Chinese Contemporary Art Gallery in Beijing, China, and the Stux Gallery in New York, NY.
